24-Hour Summer Slumberfest 2009

And a happy June to everyone!

Summer approaches and so does our 24-Hour Summer Slumberfest 2009, the
second annual event I started with David Perez. It was born out of my half-assed December 2007 attempt to read poetry for 24 hours straight. I made it about 18-hours with a huge nap in the middle. Luckily, it lead us to a new idea.

Ten months later, David and I decided to replicate the event, but knew we had to open the mic to anyone that wanted to perform.

24-Hour Summer Slumberfest 2008 was a hit last September. MACLA, also the home of the San Jose Poetry Slam, was the perfect venue for such an endeavor. We had nearly 200 people stop by, and had a parliament of 30+ people most of the time. To take a nap at 3:30am, and to wake up an hour later to see that the crowd laying around you has grown is a sight to behold. It was indescribable fun to have such confirmation for the Slumberfest.

San Jose’s just the right setting for an event of this kind. The people want it–nay–need it and MACLA’s more than happy to pursue just about anything to promote art in all of its forms. It has been a purveyor of art for sometime now, and is the true home of spoken word in Silicon Valley. There is none higher.

Last year David mentioned his interest in bringing more international performers to the Slumberfest, and being a low-cost event, we certainly could not fly people out to attend. It’s quite literally a slumber party with a stage, a few mics, a pile of blankets, sleeping bags, pillows, food (all sorts!) and a couch or two.

But dammit! We live in Silicon Valley! We’re poets and artists who are also tech nerds. There must be something we can do to bring the world to MACLA.

SOLUTION: Skype + projector + wall + camera = INTERNATIONAL SLUMBERFEST!

If you think, “Man, this sounds like fun, but I can’t fly to San Jose, California (although you really should), but I do have a Skype account and I do have a webcam and I do have internet access and I do have poetry or music that is or isn’t mine and I do like the idea of reading it aloud…” Then you’re all set to be a part of the show! Join us from your very own country, province, state, cafe, school, bar
kitchen or bedroom.

We are signing people up for Skyping or those interested in just showing up to perform. Anyone outside of the United States will get priority with time slots. If you’re interested, look up the event listing on Facebook http://tinyurl.com/kpuwej, or comment here with the the general time slot you’re interested in.

Slumberfest 2009 runs from June 5 to June 6 – 6pm Friday to 6pm Saturday.

Slots may be less than 15 minutes, but not more than 15 minutes, depending on demand. The later the better. It will be easier to get a slot at 6am then at 11pm. Pay close attention to the difference in time between your time zone and Pacific Time.
http://www.timeanddate.com/

Examples:

“I am Joe Davis. I am a poet. I live in San Jose. I will attend in person. I would like to sign up between 6pm and 7:30pm. My email address is XGHKIG at HJJIY dot COM.”
“Hey, Slumberers! I am Suzy. I live in the UK. I am a musician. I would like to play my songs over Skype sometime between 3am and 5am Pacific Time. You can reach me at SUZY at SUZY dot COM.”

David and I will be working everything out for the rest of this week, and you will get a response with your time slot and explicit Skype instructions by Thursday, June 4 or the morning of June 5.

There will be lots of laying about, aside from David and I hosting and filling in empty slots on the mic. It is recommended that if you bring food or beverage, please bring enough to share.

NO BOOZE OR DRUGS. This is a clean event. We’d love for you to get high on life instead.

Yo, What Is Currently Up?

HOME

About to pack for my short flight from Los Angeles to San José. I will be in Silicon Valley for a few days, involving two shows.

Have had an amazing few weeks on the road. A lot of it filled with Derrick Brown, Vancouver, B.C. and Honolulu. Not too shabby.

Derrick and I held a bookparty (“book release” sounds lame, like I’m putting my books back out into the wilderness, which, technically, I am–but no) in Honolulu on May 11, and in Long Beach on May 16. They were both jammed in with sweet nugget-y peeps of all sorts and walks. It was good to see Dante, Lindsey and Bobby who came to the show at {open}, a fantastic book shop run by Shea & Sé.

TANGENT: Totally listening to all of the Arcade Fire I have on my Mac.

My buddy Dante, whom I lived with in San José in 2005, whom also supplied the sweet comicbook sketch of Spherical Man and Feedbag in my book, has also written a nice review of “In Search of Midnight” at craveonline.com. Good articles there. Lots to read. His review ismore a general state of what he thinks of me, which is also good. Says a lot for spoken word.

SUMMER

Derrick Downtown Brown and I are embarking on a Euro Tour together (“European, I’m A Peein’ 2009″) in June-July. I have many dates coming up, and no-dates-on-purpose from July 14 through mid-August. Then I’ll close out August with some Chicago time.

MUST SEE

Saw Star Trek twice this month. Whoa. Dang. Son-of-a-Yes! The best action-adventure I’ve seen in years. Such quality entertainment. When they make prequels to this one in 20 years, people will complain that they don’t compare to the original 2009 version.

SHOWS

(From Slammaster, Kat Dietrich) Ladies and Gentlemen, the time to crown a new hero is upon us.  For months we have watched poets grab awe inspiring victories and ego crushing defeats. Now that the dust has settled, now that the casualties have been cleared, 10 poets remain standing to face off in the ultimate showdown known as the San Jose Grand Slam!   That’s right folks, San Jose Poetry Slam finals are here! This TUESDAY, May 19th, our top scoring poets will come together, battling it out not only to crown our Grand Slam Champion, but also to select San Jose ‘s 2009 Slam Team. The team will go on to represent San Jose at the National Poetry Slam in West Palm Beach , Florida . These Poets (selected by you) will go up against teams of poets from 80 other cities across the US and abroad, slugging it out for the title of National Poetry Slam Champions! But that’s not all; the Grand Slam will be hosted by San Jose’s own Mighty Mike McGee!!!   Don’t miss out on this blockbuster poetry event! In fact, bring every one you know!   As always, we will have poets, poetry, and beer (brought to you by our illustrious sponsor, Faultline Brewery)! We look forward to seeing you again.

Arrival in Worcester

I’ve made it to Worcester, Massachusetts. Worm Town. I am sitting at Jumpin’ Juice and Java where Poet’s Asylum is held every Sunday. Bill MacMillan (javabill) turned 42 today and is proudly displaying that number on his new Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy tee-shirt.

The poetry and spoken word scene has welcomed me with open hugs. I dig these people deep.

The night I landed, I featured at Slam Free Or Die! – Manchester, New Hampshire’s sweet, sweet open mic and poetry slam at the Bridge Café. The place is small, but the crowd and heart are huge. I’m so used to sharing winter features in the north east with Robbie Q. Telfer, that I felt a little lonely not having him here with me this time.

Marc Palos, slammaster of SFOD, picked me up from Logan Airport, took me to Worcester, where I saw my apartment for the first time. I had not seen it prior to taking it. I live on the edge.

Got my keys to my new place. It’s a little dumpy, but I know how to make dumpy feel like home or look like me. The worst part is the bathtub. There’s a slanted wall that takes up most of the standing shower space. Not very appealing, but I’ve never been one to take long showers anyway. I just despise mold and mildew and I just know there are enough crannies there for it all to hide.

I will have a major clean-up day this week. I will probably officially move in on January 1st. I own no furniture, so if you have something you’d like to hand-down to me, I will take it. Namely tables (coffee/dining/desk-ish), shelves (real or collegiate crate), and lamps. I love lamp(s). Basically, if you have a piece of furniture you do not want, AND it doesn’t smell, carry disease, or welcome infestation, then I will probably accept it and hug you in return.

I am moving into a two bedroom. I have always wanted to live alone, but it has never happened until now. I have always lived with siblings – given and chosen.

It is high time I had a space that was all mine. A number of people have hinted or mentioned wanting to take one of the rooms, but alas, that would defeat the purpose of moving here in the first place.

I like the scene here. I love many of it’s participants dearly. However, my intention was to spend as much of my 33rd year on this planet as a writer. Writing. Just getting shit out of my head and into a fixed format. Worcester will help me do this. The spoken word scene here will support me, I will support them, and we will be critical when necessary. So many good homies. So much to write. So many opportunities to eat and be merry with merry eaters.

I have always wanted an office separate from my bedroom. For the last 4 years, I’ve wanted a kitchen I can really get into and cook. I’m good at it. I want to celebrate life with people. Traveling poets. Locals. Foreigners. Lovelies. Women. Family. More women. And ladies. I want to fill my living room and kitchen with good people.

I get to do this all pretty soon.

While I may hermit-ize myself for the first couple of months, I will open my place up a bit more. I feel a little selfish about this, but not guilty. I also feel very great about what this self-centered-ness is getting me. Space. Mine. Living.

I am amazed at how little I know about living somewhere. I am floored by solitude and a bit intimidated. This is good food.

I will be in New York on January 5 at Bar 13. I will then perform at the Bowery Poetry Club the next night. There is more information on these shows behind this link: Calendar Schedule of Touring Dates

IWPS – Finals – Haiku Request

So, they got me hosting finals this year! Weeeee! A slam-long dream of mine to host a finals.

So what I might do is break up the night with various haiku. Send me your funniest haiku and the name you want credited. No promises I’ll use it.

Shit’s gonna be hot.

IWPS – FRI – Bouts Are Over

There were some upsets in the bouts tonight, but the poetry was stellar.

Not sure what the cut-off will be, but several poets have 12s going into finals.

Some high ranking first nighters are now ranked out and probably will not make it into finals.

I know this post is cryptic, but Henry Sampson has promised me the final-list of finalists…

IWPS – FRI – Quickly

As I mentioned in my last post, Buddy wakefield’s corrected rank is a 6 total. He received a 3 and a 3.

This seems to be the only change in rank I noticed on the list.

Aside from that, part of the slam world that was in attendance now knows the puppet stylings of yours truly. They have been introduced to Mr. Jimmy Awesome.

IWPS – FRI – Morning Shit

It takes very little effort to keep me awake all night.

During the National Poetry Slam in 2003, I found myself wandering Chicago and the host hotel every morning until the sun came up. Being summer, it came up pretty quickly.

But here I am again, sober, watching the sun rise in Charlotte, content and excited for today’s events. There is an Anything Goes Slam this afternoon I intend to perform in, and I will also get to bout manage and host an event, I am sure. My posts will not be as frequent when I am in the midst of these events.

I intended to post the full results earlier, but there has been some contention with regard to a few miscalculations that would change the list a bit.

IWPS Ranking works like this:
Thursday night everybody does two rounds, a 1 minute poem, then a 4 minute poem.
Friday night everybody does two rounds, a 2 minute poem, then a 3 minute poem.
(see how both nights add up to five minutes of poem? Easy peasy!)

72 poets divided by 12 per round is 6. Six bouts a night, three concurrent bouts around 7:00pm in 3 different venues, then three concurrent bouts around 8:30pm in those same 3 venues.

Thursday – If Poet 333 takes 3rd in their one minute round, then 2nd in their four minute round: they rank a 5 for Thursday night. Friday – If they then take 2nd in their two minute round, and 1st in their three minute round: they rank a 3 for Friday night. Add the two ranks together (5 + 3 = 8), they get rank of 8. In this scheme, many poets can have an eight because there are so many different combinations of 8, or 6, or 12, or 9, and so on, and so forth. There is only one combination for a rank of 4 – you MUST win every bout you’re in.

Ranking ties are decided by the scores each poet got. Not sure how that works.

So last night, all 72 poets (assuming everyone made it to Charlotte that signed up) got their first rank.

Here’s the list as I wrote it down just a moment ago. I didn’t have the patience to copy every name by hand, so here’s where I think the cut-off is important. In 2006, the 12 people that made it into IWPS Finals all had a rank of about 10 or lower. I had a rank of 8, and I was fifth place going into finals. I think Jared Paul had the cut-off with a rank of 10, while Sonya Renee had a 5 or something, which was the highest rank that year going into finals. Finals night is clean slate, so rank no longer matters, but for the second night, in my opinion, if you have rank of 13 or higher, you’re probably screwed. You never know, but considering all you’re going to do is add to your rank, even if you win both rounds, you still end up with a 15 or higher. We won’t know what the official cut-off is until tonight, but here’s everybody with a rank of 2 to 12:

NOTE: This list, while “official,” will change due to the fact that Buddy Wakefield is listed on the PSI results as having taken a 3 and a 12 in his rounds, when in fact, he took much lower 2nd round number. Once corrected, Buddy’s rank will be up somewhere near Queen Sheba’s.

Lizz Straight: 2
Chad Anderson: 2 (tied with Lizz Straight)
Tara Hardy: 3
Damien Flores: 4
Carlos Gomez
Justice Umbia
Jason McBeth
Original Woman
Queen Sheba
Eric Darby
Rare
Bobby LeFebre
Seth Walker
Bryan Patillo
Colin Gilbert
Kim Johnson
6 is 9
Karrie Waarala
Lucifury
Joaquin Zihuatanejo
Laura Yes Yes
Rudy
Andrew Tyree
Novakane
Henzbo
Scotty Crain
Axiom
Joshua Bennet
Starr
Esme Vaandrager
D.E.E.P.
Blu Bailey
Akua Doku
Dee
Ayinde Russell
Alex Charalambides: 12

Charalambides is the last poet with a rank of 12. Everyone below him has a 13 or higher. Again, I doubt any of them will move up this list, but most of these people will drop down the list tonight.

Others poet rankings of note:
David Perez, my San Jose homie who repped hard in the Bout of Doom, took a beautiful 16.

Ed Mabrey took a 10 and a 10.

For my Canadian peeps who are curious, Zaccheus Jackson and Lara Bozabalian will have to tell you themselves, for I do not gossip about my neighbo(u)rs to the north. Lara’s rank was actually posted incorrectly as well and has protested the math to the “authorities.” Not sure of her results, but I will ask her when we eat BBQ this afternoon.
–––––––––
In conclusion, I have my picks for finals, but since I am emceeing and doing bout work, I am keeping it to myself until after finals. I think this event, in its 5th year now(!) has become something so neat and fun and pretty well oiled. I mean, hey, it run by humans! Human poets, no less!

After the bouts and then dinner at the Fox & Hound next door (Dinner Party: Finneyfrock, Bozabalien, Sarah Lihz, Tara Hardy, Buddy, Eric Hagen, Brian Ellis, Zihuatanejo, Carlos Gomez, David Perez, Amy David, Charlambides, and maybe one or two other stragglers), several of us gathered in the hospitality room for some Texas Hold Em. While the room filled up with poets cyphering, watching our game, and whathaveyou, I was trying to divide some chips. Math had escaped me and so I asked the room to divide 47 by 8…

It took 2 minutes for someone to give me an answer. At that moment, we were all real fucking poets.
