I love the youth poets of Honolulu. Did a workshop last night and we had a dialogue. Mostly talking about what what got us into spoken word and writing for the page and stage. I asked the kids to list names of poets everybody needs to hear. Andrea Gibson, Ken Arkind, Danny Sherrard and several others were mentioned, alobg with a lot of love for the mentors that have come before them here on the island. When I mentioned that the kids should listen and follow Robbie Q. to learn more about humor and heart, the moan of approval from those in the know was tangible. There is a real beauty to the family that is growing here.
GROWTH
The first workshop I did in 2007 had about 7 attendees. The second workshop in 2008, co-run with Robbie Q. Telfer, had about 13 kids join us. Yesterday’s had roughly 22 people of all ages in the room. I pointed out that something is happening. I feel very in tune witht the growth going on. A lot of the kids have little interest in poetry competition. They just want to be good at expressing themselves.
It’s actually awesome.
I WANTED TO BE A PIRATE
I leave here on Monday, but on April 24 there will be. Open auditions for the upcoming installment of “Pirates of the Carribean.” The posting for it has me convinced that the physical types they’re looking to cast would fit me to a tee.
I am sad I will not be here to find out.
MARLON BRANDO VOICE: I coulda been a pirate… I coulda been a buckaneer.
SAN JOSE
I will be home in San Jose from April 8 to April 13. I will host the San Jose Poetry Slam at MACLA on April 12.

I am Mike McGee. I shouldn’t write this in this state, but I did a show tonight that was supposed to be stand-up comedy. I didn’t know this. The students who showed up for a comedian stayed for a funny poet. They stayed and they listened. They thanked me for being honest and liking spoken word for the first time. I am buying beer for the fucking table. I thought I was risking it all by bringing heart to a comedy night. Dirty Dimes prevailed.
Goddamit! I don’t know how long I have on this planet, but the jukebox is playing Hotel California and, to me, it is also Hotel Worcester…Hotel Vancouver. It is the loudest, most necessary thing in my ears. I have new, young friends who found some truth in my words, funny or not. They are celebrating this life with me in the cold, beautiful mountains of Southern Colorado.
I will finish this Scottish ale and love Lionel Ritchie, who has taken over for Don Henley. I want to party all night long too. I want to know who paid for this song to play!
I was asked to accompany a woman to her hotel room last night. I thanked her and declined. I think she deserved more. Fuck! But I am so alive now. She will cross my path again. That’s how it works in my world.
Come see ny world.
FUCK! YES! Fuck is the best of meanings!
Thank you, Thoma, for reminding me to post.
This is Mountain Time. Come on and sing aalong. All night long. All night.
I miss you. Let’s live and post from loud bars. Let’s fucking be awesome.
YES!

I am lame. I knew I’d want to attend the National Poetry Slam once it got underway. I knew I’d miss everyone and want to see all the new and old faces alike.
I knew I’d just sit around my house cooking and sweating anyway. I must confess. I should have gone on Monday with Team Worcester. I wanna see Team San Jose. I wanna hug RC Weslowski and the every Canadian team member. I wanna see Denver(s). I wanna hear good, live poetry and even some bad poetry. I wanna hang out with Papa Whoopeecat. I wanna get tangled in Ken Arkind’s beard.
I wanna marvel at the force that is Tony Jackson.
I wanna support everybody in their attempt at creative expression. I wanna host events and be a part of the heat(s). I DO NOT wanna compete. I wanna get on a plane and be there with my slam family. I wanna get poetry tagged and tag someone I’ve never heard before. I wanna kiss Khary Jackson on the forehead. I wanna play poker AND Scrabble in the middle of the night.
I wanna. I wanna have a beer or a diet cola with someone. I wanna talk about life with Joaquin Zihuatenjo. I wanna tell Steve Marsh and Erik Daniel I dig them and their faces. I wanna chill with Team Orlando again.
I wanna show everyone love and be involved in love and know I’m loved. I wanna.
I wanna. Man, every year. I just wanna.
I hope everyone is safe and having fun down there. I hope to see you all soon.
