LOCAL EMMY AWARD FOR SPOKEN WORD
Congrats to Bluz of Charlotte, North Carolina for his Emmy win. I know a poet with an Emmy! That’s rad. Not sure of all the details, but I hear it was for a local promo.

FRIDAY NIGHT
Some wonderful people came by my house on Friday to celebrate Cynthia French’s birthday. Great conversations and some Bananagrams in the living room. I baked a cake, Melinda baked cupcakes. We had to use Tony Brown’s oven since ours won’t stay below 550 degrees no matter what we set it to. Anybody have any ideas?

Tony came upstairs as we were getting underway to tell us that he just watched Shane Koyczan perform at the Olympics.

GABRIELLE
Discovered the city of Buffalo, New York declared February 14 “Gabrielle Bouliane Day.” That is just so cool. Maybe next year a bunch of us should book a show there and truly celebrate her special day. The Bunny Up Show!

Yesterday, My Quiet Little Birthday [7/365]

Monday night was Sierra DeMulder’s last show in Worcester, The Dirty Gerund at Ralph’s Rock Diner was its usual growing, vivacious self. A really rocking weekly show run by Alex Charalambides and Nick Davis. It’s the adult answer to Alex’s monthly Worcester Youth Slam. Two very different venues, but the same excitement toward expression, just drunker older people.

Sierra’s friends Alex and James drove up from NYC to see her set and to take her back with them in time for her Bowery show. They were already at Ralph’s when we arrived and when Sierra introduced us, I hugged them realizing we’d all met a couple of times previously. Sierra was not surprised, so I punched her in the neck to get ‘surprise’ out of her. They’re all good kids. Real sweethearts. I had met James in ’07 at the Revival show Gabrielle Bouliane set up in Buffalo. I met Alex at SUNY Oneonta on that same tour. One of my favorite shots I took last year is of her in a hoodie outside of the Bowery Poetry Club on a very rainy night.

We stayed up very late chatting while Sierra made me an apple pie for my birthday. They slept in the living room and we woke in the morning to see them off. So much fun. Melinda and I really love hosting people at our place. Roger Mindfucker could take it or leave it.

Alex Charalambides picked me up in the morning. He’s been pushing spoken word events and programming non-stop, like a madman. He’s wearing a lot of hats and writing grants and such to get monies for features and whatnot. Alex has really stepped up to the plate of poetry organizing. He is to Worcester what Val Kilmer is to frisbee-golf.

Charalambides, Danny Balel, Nick Davis and I headed to Marlboro, MA where we met Erin Jackson at a vocational high school to run a demo slam at an assembly. It was awesome. Those kids were just delightful. Couldn’t have been a better way to start my birthday and make a bit of dough for Alex’s causes. I cheated my ass off in the slam: I mentioned it was my birthday, used gray-area-quasi-cursing, did "Pudd’n" and "Mailed Myself a Love Letter," and took five to six minutes in both rounds because of pre-poem banter. Hey, if you are running a slam and you don’t mention time limits or produce a stopwatch, you are giving poets carte blanche. I will use this to my benefit! Assured!

Suffice it to say, I won by 3-million points. I think Nick, Erin and Danny let me win for my birthday. I really love those peeps. So good at being good people.

We grabbed some sit-down lunch in town and had a blast joking and talking. We were undoubtedly one of the most vulgar groups of people ever to socialize in Marlboro, Mass. As all hell. Had you been sitting next to us at the restaurant, you’d never have guessed that we just came from a high school where we’d just introduced clean spoken word to a bunch of teens. Or maybe you would have… Either way, I got a small bit of chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream with a candle in it. Alex bought us lunch for our slammage. I love all of them peeps.

EDIT: As noted in the comments, one of the coolest phone calls I got last night was indeed Shappy calling from the Urbana Poetry Slam to have the entire audience wish me a happy birthday. Very, very cool!

We then parted ways and I went home. Melinda was at work, so I caught up a bit on "Community" and ate Mac & Chee with tuna for dinner. Played with Roger MF for a bit. Chatted with family and friends on the phone. Tony came home, so I headed downstairs to hang with him and Missy. We drank a birthday cider and rang out my first day of 34 by watching Adult Swim while I washed a load of clothes.

A very relaxing and quiet day for the McGoof.

This Monday: My 33rd Birthday Party

Can you be in Silicon Valley on Monday night? Do you want to make some hang?

You should come to my
33rd Birthday Bon Voyage ExSlamaGanza Party
Monday, January 12, 2009 7:00pm until 11:00pm
MACLA, 510 S. First Street, Downtown San José, CA 95113
(We may move it to another spot later.)

On January 12, 2009, I will turn 33 years old. This number has always been special to me. This is also around the 10 year mark of my affiliation with the San José Poetry Slam.

For the first time ever, my birthday and the slam night coincide. While I have moved to Massachusetts, I am coming home from Worcester to be in San José for this particular night.

I want everyone I love and like to be there, and that’s a handy portion of Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. This is your chance to be a part of a great poetry slam, ring in my new year, and to wish me a fond farewell, as I will take up my first residence in 4 years, now on the East Coast.

I will supply pizza and some drinks. Feel free to bring a dish or party things. If you really want to get me a gift, make it very small, as I will have to pack it in with my luggage. I do like coffee, posters, orange things, and neat, small home items. You are a gift to me, so your presence will be presents enough.

Please do not bring alcohol of any sort. If there is to be any, the slam or I will provide it, possibly for purchase.

If you really want to help, then make a donation to the San José Poetry Slam, and/or bring snacks and food for others to eat. The slam normally charges $6.00 to get in, so I still want them to make some money.

Let’s have a real celebration! True merriment and entertainment.

What we could use are various food dishes. Easy to eat and share, and non-alcoholic beverages.

The San José Poetry Slam is held every 2nd and 4th Monday each month at MACLA’s theater.

The doors open at 7:00pm, and the slam starts at 8:30pm. Feel free to sign up and roast me if you want! I would adore that.

I will be hosting and performing at some point.

510 S. First Street, between William and Reed, in Downtown San José. Free parking after 6:00pm.

This day means so much to me, as does finally moving into my own space, albeit very far away from Silicon Valley. This could be a good reason to come visit, and an even better reason to join my email list, or stay in touch via the internet.

I am in a good place, and seeing you there would make this all so much better. This may be my last slam in San José for some time, so please try to make it out.

Toronto, Tonight! Birthday-Blast-Slam-Gig!

Detroit was phenomenal last night! Robbie and I ruled, but so did Kalimah and Johnny, and a host of other Detroit slammers. There must’ve been 300+ people in the beautiful Max Fisher wing of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra – and Savion Glover was dancing right next door! If you have not been to the Detroit Slam, you really need to because it’s pretty freek’n grand: http://www.noiramerica.com/main-culture/PNPS/picnap-poetry.php3 Tell Kalimah Robbie and I sent you.

The show was easily one of my favorites of the tour. It was packed and the people were so generous and kind to us.

Prior to the show, Robbie and I met up with my old friend Zuriel at his work, the rad rock & bowl bar/pizzeria called Sgt. Pepperoni’s. Z reintroduced me to Kristin, a friend of his I’d apparently met in Ann Arbor some years back on another tour. Zuriel continued to work while Robbie and I got to know Kristin over coffees at the bar.

We had a good time all through the night and after the slam, including a stop at a casino for some food, where most of us lost our appetites due to an incredibly intoxicated gent who decided to cover his food and table with regurgitations that looked like well-noodled chicken soup.

It was a much needed trip: I reunited with Zuriel and got to make friends with Kristin. And Robbie dug them both, making two whole new friends on this leg of thr trip!

I lost about $35 at the slots, but hey, slots are for old people and I’m only now 31 years old. Big thanks to those of you who posted birthday pleasantries on my last blog.

I had so much fun here in Detroit. Robbie and I were asked to come back for a bigger show at the DSO by one of the managers. We’ll most certainly be back.
———
Now we head off to Toronto. David Silverberg, my homie from another mommy is planning a big birthday evening for me. I am so excited, and it will be Robbie’s first time back to Canada since his was a kid.

Should be dope.

Tale End

So we’re past the hump on this tour, Robbie and I. I’ve enjoyed it thoroughly. I like being funny with him.

We’ll be performing at Jeff Kass’ high school today, very shortly, then we’re off to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for their slam.

While in Detroit, I hope to meet up with my friend Z whom I have not seen since 1996. It should be wonderful. I’ve missed him dearly.

Then we’re off to Toronto to hang with my Ontarian friends for my birthday.

31, bitches. I’m so honored to still be alive.

You should check out and possibly purchase Robbie Q’s first book, “My Huge Heart Still Has No Room For You.” You can find it here: http://www.lulu.com/pregnantbuffalo

You can but a paperback or digital version of it. It’s fantastic!
