Chico Poetry Slam

I had a great time in Chico. Great crowd. Moxie’s rules as a venue. One of the best cafe venues in the U.S. Turns out Joan Baez was performing at the same time down the street, but the local weekly rag chose me as the pick of the week. Sorry, Joan, but that’s dope!

Everyone had a good time. Even my BB. Love you, bud. It was good to be around Tazuo and the youth team. They ended up driving my sleepy ass back to San Jose yesterday morning.

The Chico Poetry Slam has a slew of potentially great poets, but the real skill lies within the Chico Speaks Out youth team. Isaac, Ulysses, Cara, Donovan and a few others. They have more stage and lyrical ability individually than most adult spoken word artists do. Listening to them practice in the van on the way home was inspiring–and they’re all still in high school. Cara runs and online zine for the group. I’ll post a link to it soon.

I took up a chance to meet Kelly Clarkson during my stay in Chico. She’s much cuter in person than I ever could’ve imagined.

If you haven’t performed in Chico yet, I highly recommend it.
